“Tri” it on for Size

Tripod Floor Lamp from CB2

Floor lamps can be a great addition to your living space. They can serve multiple functions. First and most obviously they provide light. But what kind of light? There are basically three types of light we use in a room:

  1. General Purpose Lighting - Lights up a room overall.
  2. Task Lighting - For a specific task light reading or knitting
  3. Ambient Lighting - Gives the room a nice glow to create a mood.

Floor lamps can provide all of these lighting functions. They can also serve as a nice accessory. They come in many different shapes and forms. One style that is popular these days is the tri-pod. A couple of years ago Design Within Reach featured a floor lamp similar to the one above that was almost $800! It was a great look but beyond some people’s budgets. Now CB2, Crate and Barrel’s little sister, has come on the scene reproducing some great pieces. The one above is only $199! That’s 25% of the cost. As you know I do a lot of high end design work and I am not going to pretend that the CB2 lamp has the same quality or attention to detail as the DWR lamp. BUT, if you like to change you look occasionally and take good care of your furnishings, it should not be a problem. It is fun to get the same look for less:-)

Chinese Garden Stool from Wisteria

Remember, if you are using a floor lamp in place of a table and lamp combo, make sure anyone sitting in that chair or sofa has a place to put a drink. The coffee table, a small chest or stool like the one above will do. This one is from Wisteria.
