Alternative Living Quarters

This $93,000 tree house was built on an estate in Fife, Scotland by The Treehouse Company of Kilmarnock, Scotland.  It even features a zip line for cool escapes.

Summer seems to get us in all sorts of compromising sleeping arrangements, usually at the urging of kids.  Boats, tents and sleeping bags suddenly become reasonable options.  This may come easily to those of you who come from outdoorsy families, but that’s not me.  We spent a lot of time outdoors playing, sporting and barbecuing, but when it came time to sleep, inside we went.  This got me to thinking of retreats that are a bit out of the ordinary.  Here’s a few that are a bit more up my alley.

Tree houses range from the those crafted of fallen tree branches by a group of 5th graders to custom high-end endeavors that cost a lot more than most homes.  Either way, they are fun to look at and imagine all the scheming and dreaming that goes on inside their lovingly constructed walls.

This imaginative treehouse was designed and crafted by Buamraum in Germany.  It has a certain “Peter Pan shipwrecked in a tree” feel.  Don’t you think?

For those of you looking for more temporary quarters, a tent is a good way to go.  But if you are thinking of an LLBean tent that fits in your pack, you are in for quite a surprise.  There’s a company out of Vail, Arizona called Exclusive Tents and they are taking it to a whole new level.  I could tell you more about their tents but you are better off just going to their site and seeing it for yourself.

The Fish Eagle Tent by Exclusive Tents is 645 square feet.
The signature DWR Airstream, by Design Within Reach.

And last but certainly not least, I pay homage to an enduring classic, the Airstream Trailer.  This one comes complete with linens, dinnerware, an awning and two outdoor chairs.  This little baby will only put you back $49,000!  But honestly, how jealous would your friends be when you have the perfect hideaway that fits right in your own backyard?

Have fun “roughing it” this summer!
