Easy Do-It-Yourself Projects

The headboard project requires fabric, MDF, batting, a staple gun and a couple of hours.

This headboard project may take a little time and some tools, but the customized results are well worth it.

Often when I meet someone new and tell them I am an interior designer, they ask me if I do all the work myself.  Do I make the draperies & pillows, reupholster the furniture, paint the walls, etc.  While it would be amazing to be that talented and handy, I cannot take the credit.  I have a loyal and dependable team of drapery fabricators, installers, painters and many other wonderful people who I value highly because they help my projects turn out beautifully and make it look easy at the same time.

Honestly, this gives me even more respect for those of you who really jump in an do it yourself.  This not only takes a lot of time and energy, but a willingness to make some mistakes along the way and have a “better luck next time” attitude.   That’s the rough part for me because though I try to curb to my inner perfectionist, she’s always lurking in the shadows.  :-)

I read many magazines and I visit tons of home design sites to see what’s going  in the design world.  But I have to say that one of the best for all around for content and usable advice is Better Homes & Gardens.  It is one of the most widely circulated magazines in the United State and was founded by Edwin Meredith in 1922.  That’s 87 years, folks.  Pretty impressive given the number of home magazines that have folded in the last couple of years.

The reason that I think the magazine is so popular is its relatable mix of decor, gardening and food.  Most people are bound to be interested in one of these or perhaps even all three.  They are respectful of what is going on the world and respond with advice that is timely and realistic for many Americans.  In addition to featuring many homes that were decorated by homeowners, they also have a great database of Do-It-Yourself projects.

My criteria for DIY projects is as follows:

  1. It has to be achievable for most people with average crafting skills.
  2. It has to cost less then what you would pay if you purchased the item finished from the store.
  3. It has to look professional.

Now I know this is a tall order but the creative people at Better Homes & Gardens have some great projects that fit the bill!
