Alicia B. Designs Interview

I am always inspired by Amanda Nisbet's incredibly daring use of color. Its so beautiful and she looks like she's having fun. Not too serious but still sophisticated.

Alicia says, "I am always inspired by Amanda Nisbet's incredibly daring use of color. It is so beautiful and she looks like she's having fun. Not too serious but still very sophisticated."

Alicia, from Alicia B. Designs, readily admits that she “lives and breathes design.”  She is a self proclaimed design junkie!  Alicia has a great eye and sense of style and a knack for noticing the details; good signs of an up and coming designer.  All were on display in this recent tutorial explaining what ikat fabric is.  I highly recommend visiting her blog.  It has been featured twice in the Washington Post Blog Watch.  We are very happy that she took the time to share her point of view with us on My Design Secrets.
How/why did you start your blog?
I had been reading blogs for a few months and found myself feeling somewhat unfulfilled. I felt like I had so much to share with everyone about interior design. I started small and found my enormous passion for design growing even larger. I never expected more than about 10 people to read my blog, but now I’ve been in the Washington Post Blog Watch (twice!) and I actually have a few loyal followers! It’s crazy to me, but I love sharing my thoughts with everyone.
No need to paint the walls here! The architecture here is classic, astounding. I love everything about this and even though it's traditional, he has a bit of fun with the fabrics, the chairs, and the stool in front of the fireplace.

What is the main thing you want to offer your readers?
The main thing that my readers tell me is that even though they don’t care/have an interest in design like I do, they find my tips easy to follow, and they can relate to it better. I never expected to have an interest, much less a career in interior design. I actually just fell into this by accident starting out 4 years ago and now I’m a full out design junkie building my way towards working for myself someday! I go to school part time and work full time. I think what I’d most like people to know is that you don’t have to be born with a design obsession–anybody can do this! Design is fun and you don’t have to spend a ton of money to live in a beautiful home.
"This is a super neutral palette, but it just shows you don't need color necessarily to create a beautiful space. The forms are incredibly graceful and the gallery wall over the sofa is very enviable." ~Alicia B. Designs

Could you share a couple of people/pictures that inspire you?
I have such a list of designers that inspire me that it’s crazy. I am a traditionalist at heart but I love a big punch of color. My favorites, Amanda Nisbet, Todd Romano, Alex Papachristidis, Nathan Egan, Hillary Wallace, Tom Scheerer, Victoria Hagan, Ellie Cullman, Bunny Williams, Micheal Smith, Mario Buatta, Jonathan Rosen, Hal Williamson, Charlotte Moss, and Sara Story. I know I’ve left out a bunch but…
