In-the-Wall Aquarium
Bonnie Flamm, owner of Bonnie Joy Designs, knows all about reinventing ones self. Bonnie was working as a Paralegal for over 20 years when she “saw the writing on the wall” and realized that she would soon lose her job. The two attorneys that Bonnie worked for took early retirement at the same time. Hearkening back to the days when she used to draw floor plans for “fun”, Bonnie decided to earn an Interior Design degree and hasn’t looked back since. Bonnie has also earned the title of Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists. Today she is sharing a few photos with us of the major remodel she did in her own kitchen. I love the aquarium! Thanks Bonnie…

The inspiration for this in-the-wall aquarium came to me a few years ago when I went to Australia, and had a chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Although I could not dive because I had an ear infection, I put on some goggles and swam around at the water’s top. What I saw underneath me was truly amazing. In fact, had I not seen it with my own eyes I would have thought it was a movie set!
A few years later, when I moved into this house, I sat in the living room and realized that I had a chance to create my own work of beauty. And so I set out to make my own private barrier reef, with one side being the kitchen and the other side getting framed in my living room.

The tank proved to be so beautiful that it inspired me two years ago when I completely remodeled the kitchen. I used the colors of the tank in the rest of the kitchen, and I put down black granite tile with blue specks to emulate a black sand beach. I must admit that having this living aquarium is the best thing that I have ever done. It gives me continuous happiness, and provides a wonderful world in both my kitchen and living room. I would do it again in a heart beat.
