Truer words have never been uttered! A 28" wide message is only $29 and you can choose your colors.

There is a certain degree of comfort and nostalgia that accompanies the holiday decoration boxes as they float their way from the attic to your living room.  But honestly, do we really need to use that dusty garland from 1983 again?  I vote for some creative change and I’ll get you started with an idea that you will love.  Express yourself in words and images this season with Wonderful Graffiti.  It’s cheap, it’s easy and you can choose a message that will last well past the holidays!

Your mantel will get a second look with some words of warmth and wisdom.

They have a wonderful selection of creative quotes and images but you are also welcome to come up with you own.  The Playroom is extremely user friendly so you can fool with fonts, colors and layouts until your heart’s content.  You can even create a room that replicates your own with flooring, paint, windows and furniture so you can get a feel for how it will look.

Peace, Love and Joy are always available. Truly.

When you receive it, you wash your wall and then apply it to the the wall, peel the plastic away and voile, you are done!  When and if you decide to take it down just peel it off or use a hair dryer for a little encouragement.  It is not reusable.  They also encourage you to send a photo in with your final results to inspire others.

The Writing is (Literally) on the Wall

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

A few years ago chalkboard paint was a cool, new idea.  Allow your kids to express their creativity without indelible results!  But after the initial novelty wore off you were stuck with a green or black wall and a heck of a lot of dust.  That’s why chalkboards have fallen by the wayside in most schools and been replaced with the whiteboards you see in offices.  You can write smooth as silk and really get your inner Picasso going with a wide array of colored markers.

Well, now you can do the same thing on any wall in your home.  Idea Paint is an innovative new finish that makes any wall into a white board.  It recently won awards for Innovation, Best Wall Treatment and Unique Solutions at NeoCon, the largest trade show for interior design in North America.  It is being used in offices, schools and residential projects.  The thing I love about it is that it invites collaboration.  I know you can type at lightening speed on your Blackberry but have you ever had the pleasure of seeing a piece of art or an idea come together with a group?  It’s definitely one of those situations where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I firmly believe that allowing your creativity to flow in even the smallest way releases a bit of the stress that builds up each day from multiple responsibilities, snarled traffic and not enough yummy chocolate.  Personally, I would love to paint a wall in my home office to organize my overflowing supply of ideas.  Add one in the kitchen to keep track of the groceries (or lack there of).  Pick a spot in your home for some Idea Paint, it might open up a whole new world. :-)

What is Faux Painting?

Thursday, October 16th, 2008
The use of horizontal stripes gives the room a more modern feel.

The use of horizontal stripes gives the room a more modern feel.

Faux Painting can be pretty tricky to understand with all the fancy French terms and do-it-yourself assurances.  What does faux mean?  Is Venetian Plaster really plaster? Does my “sponged” bathroom count as faux?  The subject can be easily become overwhelming.

In my book, any painting technique or look that is more than a solid coat of regular paint on the wall is decorative painting or “faux” painting as most people call it.  All the various techniques from glazes to plasters fall under this umbrella.  Faux is a French word that means “false” or “fake.”  And while many a poorly sponged bathroom is called “faux” painting, it’s simply not so.

Should you do it yourself?  The short answer is “No, leave it to the pros.”  It seems to me that homeowners often get their courage up in the powder room and while it’s not the focal point of your home, guests will visit that tiny room and wonder what you were thinking.  Experts range in cost and ability so judge their talent in the technique you desire.  Every artist has their strengths.  Review their portfolio, sample finishes and ask for references.  Also, make sure they will commit to showing you a sample of your exact finish before they start working on the walls.  Most times you will have to make a deposit or at the very least pay them a fee that covers the time it takes to make the sample board.  It is a commitment but a sample board can prevent a world of misunderstanding.

Here’s a rundown on some of the many techniques:

Wood Graining, Marbling and Metals

Some techniques are actually aiming to replicate the original material and those include wood graining, marbling or gold/silver leafing.  This is a great solution for woodwork where the labor and materials to install the real material is too costly.  It makes a dramatic difference on garage doors and kitchen cabinetry.

Glazing

Glazes offer a lot of depth and warmth to walls inside and out.  They are achieved with multiple layers of paint and glaze applied with sponges, rags and plastic wrap just to name a few.  This is the technique that is most often referred to as faux painting.

Plasters and Textures

These finishes add texture and character to your walls.  Think of European frescoes or adobe homes.  They range from quite smooth to crumbly-looking three-dimensional textures.  Venetian plaster is a technique where thin layers of plaster are applied with a spatula or trowel and then burnished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. Molds can also be made to create patterns and scenes.

An amazing example of trompe l'oeil.

Trompe L’oeil

Another French word meaning “trick the eye.”  This involves the creation of extremely realistic imagery meant to trick the viewer into thinking that the piece is three dimensional when in fact it is only two dimensional.  Many people try, but there are only a few true masters of this technique which originated in Greek and Roman times.  Some of the best examples are in European churches such as the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.

Lettering & Stenciling

Also forms of decorative painting, these effects are much easier for a novice to achieve good results.  Just remember to take your time and work methodically.  But overall, I still would recommend a professional because their in-depth knowledge of materials is critical, especially on a floor.

Now that you have some basic knowledge of painting techniques, I hope you will consider incorporating some in your home.  Consider where it will work best, take you time in choosing a professional and enjoy the transformation!

Period Wallpaper That Works Today

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
Rookwood Birchwood Frieze features a lovely silouette of a forest.

From the Arts & Crafts movement, Rookwood Birchwood Frieze (16"H) features a lovely silhouette of a forest. With crown molding above and a simple trim below, it would give a feeling of spaciousness in a room with little natural light.

Remember the post I did a couple of months ago about my friend, Amy’s “sucky” pink bathroom?  Well, she has moved to a new home since then (not because of the bathroom, but honestly she does not miss it) and is settling in nicely.  I thought of her pink bathroom today when I encountered the blog, Save the Pink Bathroom.  It’s a cool website with valuable sources for people dealing with a pink bathroom and it has some great daily posts on retro bathrooms in general.  Well, when I was on their site, I found Bradbury & Bradbury Art Wallpapers and long story short, that is what I would like to share today.

This Art Deco Pattern was designed by an architect for a woman aviator's home. Great for a kid's room.

Bradbury & Bradbury is located in Benicia, California, which is a quaint little main-street town in the Bay Area that boasts a number of beautiful Victorian Homes.  They have a large population of highly artistic people who craft everything from glass to wallpaper.  I was lucky enough to visit some of their studios because my sister once lived there.  Bradbury & Bradbury handcrafts wallpapers that are accurate reproductions from the Victorian, Arts & Crafts, and Modernism movements whose periods spanned from the late 1800’s through about 1960.  If you happen to be in the middle of an historical renovation, they have you covered; but if you are just looking for cool wallpaper then their Modernism line has a lot of great options.

The Post-War Era featured a lot of cheery, kitchen oriented wallpapers like this one. Great for a kitchen backsplash.

Have a Question for Me?

Caulk Your Sink with Ease

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I know it and you know it.  There is something in your home that needs to be caulked; some mildew in the shower, peeling around the sink, and there’s that huge gap in the baseboard.  So after months of avoidance you pull out the huge caulk gun and pray that the 5 tubes of caulk in your garage have an ounce of moisture left in them.  Of course all five tubes are bone dry and the cyle of avoidance continues…

But alas, there is a great alternative that has just made the scene.  General Electric has just introducted Caulk Singles and never before has a boring home fix it tool had such potential to change your life.  They addressed the problems that a caulk job used to present:

  • Achy hands? - This nifty little tube is easy to squeeze with one hand and has no air bubbles.
  • Messy Application? - Your skill level raises from a “13-year-old girl using liquid eyeliner” to a pro in a snap.
  • Leftovers? - One tube will do a sink, 2 tubes for a tub, and so on.  Just buy what you need.

I read through some of the user comments on the site and most people seem quite pleased.  There is even an artist who is using them as art supplies.  They come in white, clear and paintable finishes and are available at Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and Tru-Value for about $3.  Or you can sign up for a free sample here.  According to user comments the free sample arrives with instructions in Spanish, and that really seemed to tick people off.  Come on people, if you can take the time to come to the site and complain, you can surely find the instructions on the site!

Have fun and let me know your experience is like with Caulk Singles

Adorn Your Ceiling with a Decorative Medallion

Monday, July 14th, 2008

The ceiling is the fifth wall of your room, but sometimes I think it should be called the forgotten wall.  Everyone gets wrapped up in decorating their walls with faux finishes and fabulous artwork and then they run out of steam when it comes to the ceiling.  In reality, this is a fantastic place to pull it all together and really highlight the room.  I have some simple solutions that will bring your ceiling from forgotten to fantastic in no time.

Paint - Don’t just leave your ceiling the drab old white that was there when you moved in.  Consider painting it a color a bit lighter than your walls or a crisp light blue.  It will give the room a light, airy feeling.  I recommend Benjamin Moore Morning Sky Blue or Whispering Spring.

Lighting - Mood lighting is critical, especially where you are dining or relaxing.  An intriguing iron chandelier or a sleek contemporary pendent accessorizes the room perfectly.

Medallions - Used with or without a light fixture, ceiling medallions are like cuff-links on a fine men’s shirt.  They take it to the next level.  Medallions are a fairly inexpensive way to add value to your space with added architectural detail.

A couple of things to consider when choosing a medallion:

  1. Blank Canvas - Medallions are made of plaster or high density urethane and primed to be painted in any way you fancy.  Consider painting one to coordinate with your fixture for an updated feel.
  2. Cover up - Ceiling medallions are a good way to cover old marks on the ceiling or a junction box you don’t intend on using.
  3. Style - Keep the style of your fixture and the rest of your room in mind.  Take cues from the woodwork in your room.
  4. Selecting a Size - There are no hard and fast rules on selecting a size.  I prefer the medallion to be a bit smaller than a chandelier and a lot smaller than a fan.  The larger your room and higher your ceiling the larger the medallion you should choose.  Taping a cardboard template to the ceiling is the easiest way to make a good decision.

Monday, June 9th, 2008

If your life story was a Broadway play, what would the scenery look like?  Would it include the dreamy canals of Venice or are you more inclined toward a winding back road in Vermont?  Do you love the bright lights of the big city or do you dream of the plains of the Serengeti?  The choice is yours with Murals Your Way

“Asian Garden” from Wall Slicks

It seems that everywhere you look these days you can spy a bird motif. From t-shirts to stationery, the blue-bird of happiness is waiting in the wings (I know, corny). Anyway, I saw something today that caught my eye and it’s an easy way to leap into spring or change it up in any room (think kids, holidays, ho-hum kitchens). Wall Slicks is the home to “Modern Wall Graphics”. These decals remind me of the Colorforms of my youth. They are easy to apply and remove, no muss, no fuss, no commitment (like wallpaper or a mural). They look just like paint so your friends will think you have unleashed your inner Van Gogh.

The Writing is on the Wall

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Sometimes you hear a quote or the lyrics to a song and they just ring true. You want to put them in a place so you are reminded of them often.

Well, here is one super cool way to do it and incorporate it into your home design. The company Wonderful Graffiti makes removable letter transfers to put on your walls. They have a variety of great quotes to choose from or you can make up your own. You can choose different sizes, colors and fonts to really personalize it. Lately they have added 2 more products. The first one is called Blank Canvas and you can have anything you like transferred to an artist’s canvas to display as artwork on your wall. The second item is called Graffiti 3D and you can have your words in 3-D enamel letters in Lucite or brushed aluminum.

They have also just added another website tailored specifically to weddings. It is called Wonderful Graffiti Wedding. You can use the lettering for wedding favors, cars, dance floors and place cards. The options are endless. Have fun:-)
